The Mustangs’ reward Tuesday for their season-long dominance came in the form of a number far lower than their current 17-game winning streak: 4, as in a No. 4 ranking in the NAIA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll.
Master’s, which had held steady in the poll since opening the season at No. 5, is 18-1 overall and 4-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
The Mustangs have yet to win a regular-season GSAC title in program history. But they won the conference tournament title last year and have built on that momentum in 2017-18.

Master’s men’s basketball team ranks No. 4 in 2018 NAIA Coaches’ Poll.
Master’s opened GSAC play with wins over Menlo College, which was receiving votes, and No. 22 William Jessup.
The Mustangs then found themselves in two close games at halftime during last week’s road trip to Arizona Christian and San Diego Christian. From there, on both occasions, Master’s ratcheted up its defense and pulled away.
“We locked in on the defensive end for the first 10 minutes of the second half and that is what opened it up,” coach Kelvin Starr said after Thursday’s 89-76 win in Phoenix over No. 23 Arizona Christian. “Happy to get any GSAC win on the road.”
The Mustangs will be at home Saturday against Westmont College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. on Bross Court.
