The Master’s University women’s volleyball team entered one of the toughest regular season tournaments in the NAIA with an undefeated record and came away from it with a signature win.
NAIA coaches took notice.
The Mustangs (10-3) earned a No. 25 ranking in the second coaches’ poll of the season Tuesday, returning to the top 25 for the first time since 2015.
Master’s beat then-No. 14 Columbia College, 3-1, in a true road match Saturday and pushed then-No. 1 Lindsey Wilson to five sets later in the day as part of the Hampton Inn Classic in Columbia, Mo.
In Tuesday’s poll, Lindsey Wilson fell to No. 4 and Columbia moved up to No. 3.
“It shows the girls that we can win at the unranked level and we can win at the ranked level,” Vince said.
The coach also said the tournament’s results added extra motivation to Golden State Athletic Conference play, which begins for TMU on Friday in Arizona. The Mustangs know they can compete with the NAIA’s best, now they just need to earn the right to do it again in November.
The winner of the GSAC tournament earns an automatic bid to nationals.
“(The Columbia win) allows us to see where we can go,” Vince said. “It allows us to put our goals at different levels.”
