Game Recap By Mason Nesbitt, TMU Sports Information Director
It was Westmont College’s turn Friday night to snap an impressive winning streak and set the stage for a thrilling home stretch in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Despite The Master’s University’s 3-0 loss in Santa Barbara, a defeat that brought to an end a 12-match winning streak that began in early September, the No. 11 Mustangs remain in first place in GSAC standings by two matches. Six contests remain.
“Streak-snapping is becoming a popular pastime between our two programs,” said Master’s coach Allan Vince, on a night his team lost by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-16.
The result was the inverse of the first time the teams met this season, when Master’s (22-4, 11-1 GSAC) ended Westmont’s 32-match winning streak in conference play.
The Mustangs also won in three.
When No. 17 Westmont (18-4, 9-3) returned the favor Friday, it was the Warriors’ sixth sweep in their last seven conference matches. They have won seven in a row after dropping three straight GSAC contests while the Mustangs continued to build a sizable advantage on the road toward what would be the first regular season GSAC title in program history.
The cushion was reduced Friday, but not eliminated.
“Westmont exposed some weaknesses on our side of the net that I look forward to training so they become or strengths,” said Vince.
Madi Fay led the Mustangs with eight kills, while Jane Cisar (pictured above) followed with six. Regan Tate added five kills for Master’s, which will play at Hope International on Oct. 19 before returning home to host San Diego Christian the following night.
Kayla Sims recorded 11 assists and three blocks, both team highs. McKenna Hafner provided 11 digs in front of a strong Warrior crowd.
“Westmont was egged on by a great crowd who attended their homecoming night,” Vince said.
Here’s the box score.
