This Saturday, May 19, West Ranch High School is presenting Super Jazz at the Ranch, featuring jazz bands from across the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas.
Top adjudicators that include active professional musicians and notable jazz educators, will be on hand to evaluate jazz ensembles from the William S. Hart Union High School District and other schools from around Southern California.
Super Jazz at the Ranch is an annual jazz festival, created by noted music educator Bob Babko, to bring professional and student musicians together. At the All State Music Education
Conference, held earlier this year in Fresno, Babko was inducted into the California Alliance for Jazz Hall of Fame, in recognition of his dedication to music education.
Establishing the Super Jazz music festival more than a decade ago was just one of his many endeavors to provide local jazz students with extraordinary opportunities to perform and learn.
Performances begin at 9 a.m. and will run throughout the day in the West Ranch High theater, library and outdoor amphitheater, culminating with an awards ceremony at 7:15 p.m. In addition to the competition, there will be special guest appearances and clinics.
Festival highlights:
10:30 a.m. to noon: Jerry Steinholtz and the CSUN Latin Jazz Ensemble Clinic and Performance;
Noon to 1 p.m.: Golden Oak Jazz Band, under the direction of Bob Babko;
