The number of assaults and motor vehicle thefts at College of the Canyons rose in 2010 from the previous two years, according to the latest Annual Security Report, released by the college Friday.

There were three reported aggravated assaults at COC in 2010, which is more than the college saw in 2008 and 2009 combined. The increase appears to be trending, with two reported assaults in 2009 and no reported incidents in 2008.

The number of stolen motor vehicles also tripled in 2010 with three. By comparison, there was only one car theft reported in each of the previous two years.

The number of reported burglaries at COC decreased to seven, one less than 2009. However, the last two years has seen a major increase in the number of reported burglaries with 15 compared to only three in 2008.

All other crimes remained the about same in 2010.

One reported case of a forcible sex offense in 2010 kept the number the same from two years prior.

There was one on-campus incident of a “drug abuse violation,” the same number as the previous year. However, there were no cases reported in 2008.

The annual report was released in compliance with the federal Clery Act, which requires all universities receiving public funds to make crime statistics available to the public, or risk losing funding. Data in the report was made available as far back as 2008.

The report is named after Jeanne Clery, a 19-year-old student at Lehigh University who was raped and killed in her dorm room in 1986. The act was signed into law just four years later, originally called the Campus Security Act. The law is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education.
