The College of the Canyons men’s soccer team was dealt a 1-0 defeat by Oxnard College, as the Condors’ late second half goal was enough to top the Cougars Tuesday night.
Oxnard came with a strong attack all night, recording 12 shots in the game, but Gabriel Ochoa had a strong showing in goal for COC, making five saves in the game, four of those in the first half.
One of the game’s biggest moments came in the 45th minute when Ochoa made an incredible diving save on an Oxnard free-kick to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
The Cougars’ best chances of the game came during a three-minute span midway through the second half when Canyons had three close calls on corner-kicks. But the Condor defense was able to weather the storm and keep the game scoreless.
In the 79th minute, Oxnard was able to create a successful attack and break the stalemate when Luis Juarez scored his first goal of the season off of a pass from Ricardo Zamarron to give the Condors a 1-0 advantage with 11 minutes remaining in the match.
Ochoa would make another good save to keep the game within reach, but the Cougars eventually ran out of time and the game ended with a 1-0 Oxnard victory.
The Condors outshot Canyons by a 12-4 margin, with the Cougars were only able to register one shot on goal the entire match.
COC (1-2) will next travel to Sacramento to face Mendocino in the Northern California Community College Showcase hosted by Cosumnes River College on Saturday, Sept. 9. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
