Sophomores Jasmine Hall and Samiyah Hawkins each won a pair of events on the women’s side and freshman Delon Buncio leaped his way to a first place finish for the men’s squad, as the College of the Canyons track & field teams finished second and fourth, respectively, at the Bakersfield College Relays on Saturday.

Buncio was the lone event winner for the men’s team, taking first in the long jump at a distance of 6.50m. The freshman also placed second in the triple jump at 12.84m and was part of COC’s 4x100m relay team, joining Blake Beeler, Slade Cavallaro and Leo Lambert III to clock a second place time of 3:22.06.

Marcel Sylvester finished second in the high jump for COC with a mark of 1.90m. Weston Lombardo (4.18m) and Zachary Larson (3.88m) took second and third in the pole vault. Larson was also fourth in the 100h at a time of 16.24.

Diontre Harris had a second place showing in the shot put at 13.80m. He also threw the discus 34.48m for a fifth place finish. Alexander Lawrence took third in the discus at 37.30.

Louis Eusebi came home with third place finishes in the 100m (11.46m) and 200m (22.89).

Tochukwe Eze was third in the 400m at a pace of 50.58m and Travis Larson was third in the 800m.

Canyons finished with 97 event points to place fourth behind Bakersfield (109), Glendale (123) and El Camino (137) in the field of seven.

The women’s team was second at 108 event points, trailing only first place El Camino College (166). Host Bakersfield (87) placed third.

Hall continued her strong season with first place finishes in the triple jump (11.11m) and high jump (1.63m). She also threw for a distance of 40.02, in the javelin to rank second.

Hawkins was the other big winner on the day, taking top billing in the shot put (12.02m) and discus (36.27m).

The Canyons relay teams also fared well with the combination of Ariana Cooper, Díani Ellis, Sophia Stephan and Hall taking second at a time of 4:14.10.

The 4x100m relay team of Nameda Skarule, Keyana Session, Tayler Stiverson and Hall was third at 50.43m.

Jessica Ruiz, Hall, Ellis and Alexandra Whitman clocked in at 12:51.28 in the 4,000m distance relay to finish second.

Ruiz also was third in the 800m at 2:25.54.

Skaraule ran a time of 13.30 to finish third in the 100m, with Session just a step behind in fourth place at 13.33.

The Cougars will return to Bakersfield on Friday, March 31, to compete at the Western State Conference (WSC) Inland Meet. Events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
