Children of families impacted by the current federal government shutdown may qualify for free or reduced meal benefits through the USDA School Breakfast and National School Lunch programs.
“The negative impact of the current federal government shutdown is borne by the families and students of federal workers,” said Ralph Peschek, Chief Financial Officer of the Hart School District. “In some cases, families are having to make choices on how to stretch their savings and what bills need to be paid first to assure the family is safe and secure.”

Any family that has been negatively impacted by the shutdown should submit an application for free or reduced meal benefits to their school district. While a family may not have qualified for benefits previously, the loss of income due to the shutdown may now qualify a family to receive benefits.
“A significant life event such as loss of income due to layoff or furlough can potentially qualify a family for free or reduced meal benefits,” said Ken Bristow, Food Service Director for the Hart School District. “If a student eats breakfast and lunch at school each day, qualifying for free meal benefits represents a savings of $4.75 per student each day in the Hart District. We would encourage any family that has been affected to file a new application for benefits at their school or district food services office.”
