Chuck Lyon, representing Trustee Area 1, resigned effective Thursday, June 27, from the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees.
The board oversees operation of College of the Canyons.
Trustee Area 1 includes Castaic and areas west of the Old Road.
Lyon did not disclose a reason for his resignation which he announced after a closed session meeting held on Wednesday for the annual evaluation of COC Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook.
The date of his resignation will allow his seat to be eligle for a speical election on the November ballot.
Lyon was elected to the COC board in November 2022 and was sworn in alongside longtime board member Joan MacGregor in December 2022 by COC Board President Dr. Edel Alonso (as seen in the photo above).
Lyon was elected to fill the seat of Mike Berger who retired from the COC board in 2022 after serving for 13 years. Lyon ran unopposed in teh 2022 election.
MacGregor, who represents Trustee Area 5, has also announced she will step down from the COC board prior to the election. Her seat, like Lyon’s is not officially up for the ballot until 2026. Because she has not yet offically resigned her seat will not appear on the November ballot and will be filled by appointment.
The other three members of the COC board include Alonso who represents Trustee Area 2, Sebastian C.M. Cazares who represents Trustee Area 3 and Jerry K. Danielsen who represents Trustee Area 4. Danielsen replaced Michele Jenkins, who died Feb. 6, 2023, after nearly 40 years of service as a COC Board of Trustees member.
Lyon served 12 years as a faculty member/coach at Pasadena City College and 23 years at COC as a teacher, coach, athletic director and dean.
He was named to the dean/athletic director position in 2017. Prior to the addition of his status as dean he served as COC’s athletic director from 2007.
Lyon led the COC football program from 1998=2006 season and helped the program win its only national and state championships in 2004.
In 2004 he was also named the National Community College Football Coach of the Year.
His long association with COC dates back to when Lyon became the first player to score a touchdown in Cougar Stadium as quarterback of the COC football team, 1973-1974.
