FOUNDATION HELPS FUND EARLY CHILDHOOD OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM
During March and April of 2016, the Foundation’s Circle of Friends worked with the COC’s Center for Early Childhood Education to raise funds and secure grants for $350,000 from “First-Five L.A. and the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation to construct an innovative and unique Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom Site. The Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom Program is part of a national movement that recognizes schools that have made a commitment to providing outdoor classrooms and comprehensive programing to help children understand nature as an integral part of learning. At COC, it will also serve as a demonstration site for the Center for Early Childhood Education academic students majoring in Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, American Sign Language, Biology, the Sustainability Center, Santa Clarita Environmental Education Consortium and various student clubs including Student Nutrition & Wellness Advocates, Hands on Earth, Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) projects, as well as a field trip site for early care educational programs from the local K-12 schools community. FOUNDATION LEADS A PARTNERSHIP TO
BENEFIT LOCAL VETERANS
Over the last year the Veteran Resource Center at College of the Canyons (COC) served nearly 1,100 student veterans and their families. The Center does an excellent job of providing education services to include VA Education and Vocational Benefits. However, there are many students that start this process, but do not make it to successful completion. While some veterans may need additional military transitional services to be successful, many of those services are not readily available in the Santa Clarita Valley. For the last several months, Chancellor’s Circle volunteers, Elliott and Judy Wolfe, have worked to form a partnership with USC’s Graduate School of Social Work veterans and military families program to bring graduate social work fieldwork students to COC’s Veterans Resource Center to offer social services, therapy and information and referral services to assist our veteran students. As part of this project, the Foundation has played a leadership effort in the formation of a community collaborative or coalition of Individuals, corporations, and non-profit organizations who are willing to exchange ideas, and offer whatever assistance is within their province, such as jobs, training, and housing for veterans.
