College of the Canyons students will explore California’s natural beauty, innovation and enduring spirit of optimism during the “California Dreaming” art exhibit at the Old Town Newhall Library beginning Oct. 1.
Using digital and traditional methods of drawing and illustration, students from the college’s Graphic and Multimedia Design department have imagined California as emblematic of the American dream.
COC students whose work will be displayed used this as an opportunity to gain professional experience while enrolled as students.
“Commercial artists will always be faced with the challenges of interpreting concepts in order to create illustrations,” said Kevin Jenkins, chair of the college’s Graphic and Multimedia Design department. “The illustrations in this exhibit have a broad spectrum of interpretation and showcase a variety of illustration styles and creativity.”
California Dreaming was a natural fit for the exhibition’s theme because many COC students grew up in California while working towards their dreams.
“They were familiar with ideas of what California could represent,” Jenkins said.
The public is invited to visit the California Dreaming exhibit at the Old Town Newhall Library from Oct. 1 through Feb. 1, 2015.
College of the Canyons also invites the public to a reception at The Community Room inside the Old Town Newhall Library at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Light appetizers will be served.
The Old Town Newhall Library is located at 24500 Main St. in Santa Clarita.
