In a dominant season opener, College of the Canyons defeated Cypress College by a 4-0 final score on Tuesday.
Canyons capped the first half up 1-0 on a goal scored by sophomore Jorge Rojas in the 19th minute. Things really begin to heat up in the second half when Canyons shifted into gear and scored three goals within a span of 22 minutes.
COC sophomore Cesar Dominguez scored only seven minutes into the second half on assist by fellow sophomore Tyler Jovel. From there, Canyons kept attacking with a 2-0 advantage.
In the 59th minute Canyons added another goal from sophomore Justin Marquez assisted by Rojas giving the Cougars a commanding 3-0 lead.
Canyons then saw another goal on a shot in the 74th minute by sophomore Byron Perez, essentially putting the game away for the Cougars at 4-0.
COC goalkeeper Gabriel Ochoa recorded three saves to post the clean sheet and earn the win.
The Cougars recorded 23 shots in the game, including eight on goal, compared to just 11 for Cypress. The two teams both earned three corner kicks.
After opening the season with an impressive home showing, Canyons will look to keep that momentum rolling in its upcoming non-conference road match vs. Palomar College at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31.
