OXNARD — Freshman Corey Haase earned co-medalist honors with a two-under score of 70 as College of the Canyons won its third straight conference event on a blustery day at River Ridge Golf Course on Monday.
Haase’s season-best round of 70 tied with Joey Herrera of Ventura College and led the Cougars who combined for a five-man score of 379 to win the event.
Tourney host Ventura College finished in second place at 391 followed by Santa Barbara City College in third place at 394. Allan Hancock and Bakersfield College rounded out the top-five team scores at 402 and 413, respectively.
The Cougars featured four players with scores in the 70s, with Haase joined by Jones Comerford (75), Jack Roycroft (76) and Clemente Yanes (78). Michael Lindgreen added a round of 80 to compose COC’s final score.
Clayton Kucera also competed at the event but had his round of 86 scratched.
The 12-stroke victory by Canyons is the second largest of the season, with the Cougars having previously won Western State Conference event No. 3 at Alisal Ranch by 14 strokes over Allan Hancock, back on Feb. 19. The Cougars will get a break from conference competition next week with the team scheduled to compete in the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Preview at Bakersfield Country Club on March 5.
