Allyson Felix was the odds-on favorite to do what no woman has done before – take home a fourth consecutive gold medal in the 200-meter sprint.
But gold got away from her Saturday in South Korea. So did silver.
The 25-year-old Santa Clarita Valley native had to be satisfied with bronze – and satisfied, she wasn’t.
“I’m disappointed,” she told reporters, “but I’m driving for next year.”
Felix had silvered Monday in the 100-meter dash at the IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Daegu. Her fans considered it warm-up for the event she dominates.
But on Saturday, her time of 22:42 wasn’t enough. Teammate Carmelita Jeter was a fraction of a second faster at 22.37, behind Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown’s gold-medal time of 22.22.
Felix didn’t attend the awards ceremony to collect her bronze medal. Reports indicate she was busy warming up for the 4×400 relay.
“I have no regrets,” Felix Tweeted after the 200. “Never be afraid to fail. Ready to work even harder to be ready for London 2012.”
Felix, who lives in Santa Clarita, is looking to the London Games for a chance to beat her individual Olympic best. She took home silver in the 2004 and 2008 Games, and won gold in Beijing as a member of the 4×400 relay team.
This year she won the 400-meter event at the 2011 USA Outdoor Championships to become the first American woman ever to take national titles in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter in a career.
