Finally. SCV sprinter Allyson Felix picked up her only gold medals of the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea, this weekend as a member of the U.S. 4×400 and 4×100 relay teams.
Felix, 25, had silvered in the individual 400-meter sprint earlier in the week and was expected to win Friday’s 200 but came away with bronze.
Saturday she put disappointment behind her and charged back to help Team USA capture its third consecutive world championship in the 4×400.
The team of Felix, Jessica Beard, Sanya Richards-Ross and Francena McCorory finished with a time of 3:18.09, besting the powerful entries from Jamaica (3:18.09) and Russia (3:19.36).
Felix had drawn some fan criticism earlier Saturday when she no-showed for the medal ceremony in the individual 200. The announcer in Daegu explained she was busy warming up for the 4×400.
“Missing a ceremony for any other reason is not my style,” Felix later Tweeted. “I’m proud to have won the bronze and I have the most respect” for winner Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica.
“Had a blast running the 4×4,” she Tweeted after Saturday’s gold-medal relay. “Such an honor to be on this team.”
She wasn’t done. She did it again for the U.S. on Sunday as part of another four-woman squad in the 4×100.
Felix ran the second leg, taking the handoff from Bianca Knight. Felix passed the baton to Marshevet Myers, and Carmelita Jeter crossed the finish line at 41.56, ahead of a Jamaican team that had knocked the U.S. out of first place two years ago. Jamaica silvered Sunday with a time of 41.70, followed by the Ukranians at 42.51.
For Felix, it was a history-making moment. It was her unprecedented eighth career world gold medal.
“Running tonight was an incredible feeling,” she Tweeted afterward. “So honored to be on this team. Blessed to bring home the gold!”
