RANCHO CUCAMONGA – Lancaster was unable to overcome three home runs from Rancho Cucamonga in an 8-2 loss at LoanMart Field Saturday night. The JetHawks are now one game back of a three-way tie atop the South Division standings.
Rancho Cucamonga (27-29) wasted little time jumping in front. Gavin Lux led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot. In the third, Rylan Bannon took Ty Culbreth deep to make it 2-0.
The game-changer came in the fourth inning. After a pair of infield singles, Steve Berman hit a three-run home run to put the Quakes in front, 5-0. Ty Culbreth (1-3) went six innings, but allowed a career-high three home runs.
Isaac Anderson threw four shutout innings for the Quakes, but it was Stetson Allie (1-1) that earned the win in relief for Rancho. The Quakes used five pitchers Saturday.
Lancaster (26-30) had four hits in the first two innings, but failed to score. The JetHawks finally scored their first run of the series on an error in the sixth inning. Vince Fernandez scored the run, and also added two hits in his return from the disabled list.
Rancho sealed the win with three runs in the eighth inning. Kenny Oakley faced six batters, allowing hits to five. Saige Jenco’s RBI single put Rancho up, 8-1.
The JetHawks added a run in the ninth, but it was not enough. Lancaster has dropped five of its last seven games, and the team is winless in its last five series.
Desipte the defeat, Lancaster is just a game back in the standings. Rancho Cucamonga, Lake Elsinore and Inland Empire are all tied for first place with identical 27-29 records heading into Sunday.
Lancaster tries to avoid a sweep in the finale Sunday afternoon. The JetHawks have not announced a starter, while Rancho will go with Andrew Sopko (3-3). First pitch at LoanMart Field is scheduled for 2:05 pm.
