College of the Canyons sent 18 batters to the plate in a decisive 13-run second inning at Whitten Field on Tuesday, propelling the Lady Cougars to a walkaway 18-5 home win over L.A. Mission College.

Canyons (8-4, 3-1) netted its 13 runs in the second frame by way of 12 hits, two walks and two errors, ending the inning with two runners left on base.

The 18 runs scored by COC represents a season-high and marks the fifth time that Canyons had totaled double-digit runs. The win was also the team’s fourth mercy victory of the season.

Sophomores Micayla Aguilar and Valerie Rivas both had three-hit days for the Cougars. Rivas tied with teammate Kaitlyn Post for a game-high four RBIs. Her two-run single in the first inning evened the contest at 4-4 after L.A. Mission had opened up a surprising 4-0 advantage to start the afternoon.

Post and Rivas both recorded two-run hits in the home half of the first, with Rivas’ coming moments after she seemingly called her shot to teammates from the on-deck circle.

In the big second inning, it was Aguilar who sparked the rally with a bases-loaded single that plated the first run of the outburst, and set up Post for another two-run double. Post finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs, a walk and four RBIs.

Sierra Boyajian had the other big knock off the inning in the form of a two-run triple. She later came around to score on a wild pitch and finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs in the game.

COC pitcher Megan Wilson (4-2) earned the win for her three and 2/3 innings of work. She did not start the game but took the circle in the first after Post got into an early jam, and limited the Eagles to a hit and a walk.

L.A. Mission (9-10, 3-3) recorded four hits in the game, including two from sophomore Sofia Castro, and drew five walks along the way. The Eagles’ big four-run first inning was spurred by two COC errors, two walks and a hit batter.
