California Institute of the Arts might be No. 6 on the list of the world’s best film schools according to the Hollywood Reporter, but it’s No. 1 on a new list from the online version of Newsweek magazine.

The Valencia arts college ranked at the top of the list of  most “artistic” U.S. colleges in a new poll from The Daily Beast, the magazine’s home on the Web.

Newsweek split colleges into 25 categories and assigned them rankings based on data from the College Board, which administers SAT and other tests.

CalArts wasn’t the cheapest college, nor was it the most athletically minded. But when it came to visual and performing arts, CalArts sailed past the rest of the field.

To determine the most “artistic” college, Newsweek developed metrics to assess just how “imaginative their study body is, as well as how much the college fosters a creative atmosphere.”

“We only looked at 4-year schools that admit less than 50 percent of applicants, to screen for the most selective of the creative colleges,” Newsweek/The Daily Beast said.

It based rankings on the percentage of undergraduate students studying visual or performing arts, and the support those students got from their college as determined by the number of clubs they have for drama, music ensembles, dance, film society, literary magazine, musical theater, student newspapers and television stations.

In rank order, Newsweek’s top 25 most artistic colleges are:
