An evening with the CSUN Sports Network’s Ross Porter has been set for Tuesday, October 3 at the Soraya (formerly the Valley Performing Arts Center).

CSUN alumni Richard Kaufman (’77) and Chris McGee (’94) will join Porter on stage at the event with two completing interviewing duties. All proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit organization Stillpoint Family Resources.

Tickets are currently on sale for the event, which includes a baseball food dinner. Along with general admission, guests can purchase VIP tickets for an opportunity to visit with Porter at a pre-program dinner. At the event, Porter will answer questions from guests and reminisce about his historic broadcasting career.

Porter, who completed his second season calling CSUN Baseball games last May, spent 28 years as the play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2005, Porter was inducted by longtime colleague Vin Scully into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In a broadcasting career that began when he was 14 years old, Porter also worked for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, NBC Sports calling NFL games, Pac-8 college basketball games and UNLV men’s basketball games. Porter is the only broadcaster to voice a World Series champion (Dodgers in 1981 and 1988) and NCAA champion (UNLV in 1990).

“We are definitely going to cover the Dodgers during the evening but there are other stories that I’m going to tell,” said Porter. “For instance, I met Jim Thorpe when I was 11 years old. I already started to make a list of the topics I would like to discuss and then I will narrow down to what I think is the most interesting.”

For Porter, the event is not only a chance for fans to hear stories but it’s an opportunity to raise awareness for Stillpoint Family Resources and help the organization founded by his son Dr. Ross Porter and his wife Jennifer.

“I’m proud of Stillpoint, and pleased and grateful for what they’ve done,” said Porter. “Stillpoint was founded in 1998 by Ross and Jennifer after their son John Michael was born with Down Syndrome. Ross has tried to help as many people as possible with the organization and its been a big benefit to the community. Stillpoint not only helps special needs families, but abused women, all individuals at risk and it runs the gamut of people in crisis. We’ve done our celebrity golf classic for the past 11 years to benefit the organization. In November, it will be our 12th event and the results have been tremendous.”

A two-time Emmy nominee, Kaufman has conducted symphony orchestras across the United States and around the world. For nearly two decades Kaufman supervised music at MGM, and has worked on film and television productions and classical music in concert. Kaufman also owns the distinction of writing the CSUN alma mater and the CSUN fight song.

“It’s a gift to me that I’m able to be a part of whatever this organization does. Stillpoint has many wonderful volunteers starting with Ross and [wife] Lin,” said Kaufman. “This night is going to be a lot of fun. I’ve had the good fortune to have Ross as a friend for a long time. Ross is one of those people that is a poster child of what is a good guy. To have an evening to sit, listen and ask Ross questions is going to be very special. I would pay just to be there, but I’m lucky to participate.”
McGee, who is a Spectrum SportsNet host and covers the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Galaxy, is also scheduled to attend the event. During his time with CSUN, McGee competed on the men’s volleyball team from 1991-94 and helped the Matadors advance to the 1994 NCAA Final Four. A setter with the Matadors, McGee also served as team captain in 1993 and 1994.
