[LASD] – In lieu of the traditional monthly reserve meeting/training session Thursday, reserve deputies from Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station were deployed in the field, and other various positions in the station. A total of 9 reserve deputies went on patrol, mostly in the Jakes Way-Fair Oaks Ranch area, with the mission of writing citations, giving traffic warnings, providing high visibility, and making citizen contacts to inform residents in the area of the new city annexation and Santa Clarita Station’s commitment to reduce crime in the area. Numerous contacts were made and 6 citations were written. The reserve deputies reported extremely positive feedback from residents in the area who said they were happy to see the extra patrols.

Reserve Deputy Sheriffs are utilized to supplement the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s law enforcement manpower. Like full-time deputies, reserve deputies are professionally trained and duly sworn law enforcement personnel. In most cases, reserves are assigned to the same duties as full-time deputies. Since reserve deputies have the same powers of arrest as full-time deputies they are required by law to meet the same hiring, background, medical and psychological standards as full-time deputies. Most reserve deputies are available to work in virtually all aspects of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. After becoming field qualified, a Level 1 reserve deputy can work patrol alone or with a partner and has peace officer status.

Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station has approximately 35 reserve deputy sheriffs assigned to the station. These reserve deputies must volunteer a minimum of 20 hours of their time a month with the regular compensation being one dollar per year. Santa Clarita Station reserve deputies volunteer thousands of hours each year serving the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley. Reserve deputies are a vital part of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station.

* A United States Citizen;

* At the time of appointment, at least 21 years of age (there is no upper age limit);

* A high school graduate or equivalent;

* Posses a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License of higher;

* Be gainfully employed or a full time student;

* Be available to attend the Sheriff’s Department Reserve Academy;

* Be willing to subscribe to the oath of affirmation of allegiance for public employees;
