Shortly after MidAmerica Nazarene University beat The Master’s College women’s soccer team 2-1 in the 2014 home opener on Monday at Reese Field, Lady Mustang head coach Curtis Lewis talked about needing to get results.
“We need to put away our chances,” Lewis said in Monday’s post-game interview. “Right now we are giving up way too many goals. We need to figure out how to solve that problem. The girls worked hard, but unfortunately, that didn’t give us the result we wanted.”
Two days later, Lewis and his Lady Mustangs finally got the results they wanted.
On Wednesday, the 18th-ranked Lady Mustangs took to Reese Field for a 4:00 PM match against Pomona-Pitzer, an NCAA Division III-based school. At the end of two halves, TMC beat the Sagehens 5-0, lifting their 2014 season record to 3-2.
Three of TMC’s five goals in Wednesday’s match where scored in the first half, two of which were done by Katie Farris (Santa Clarita, CA).
Farris got the Lady Mustangs on the board five minutes into play when the senior defender scored off an assist by Devon Goff (Santa Clarita, CA).
Elvia Contrares (Santa Clarita, CA) followed Farris by scoring off an assist from Jordan Benson (Corona, CA) five minutes later, putting the Lady Mustangs up 2-0.
Eight minutes later, Farris connected with a Contrares assist, giving TMC a 3-0 advantage.
The Lady Mustangs retained their 3-0 going into half time, outshooting the Sagehens 8-5.
Just one minute after the break, Jenae Garcia (Paramount, CA) scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from Taylor Rowden (Mission Viejo, CA), giving TMC a 4-0 lead.
Finally, putting the match well out of reach at the 64:15 mark was Natasha Coyle (La Habra, CA) who scored off a penalty kick.
Not only was TMC’s 5-0 victory the highest scoring game for the Lady Mustangs in their 2014 campaign, it was also their first shutout as senior goalkeeper Tita Garcia (Colorado Springs, CO) tallied six saves against the Sagehens.
Commenting on Wednesday’s match, Coach Lewis said, “We had a sound finish against a very good passing team. We talked all week about needing to start games better, and we did as we were up 3-0 18 minutes into the first half. I’m very proud of the way the girls served one another today as we were able to give all field players minutes. That was very rewarding.”
Now the Lady Mustangs turn their attention to Saturday’s match against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The Eagles enter Saturday’s match with a 1-3 record.
“Embry riddle always has a strong team,” said Lewis. “It will be a good game and will end a long stretch of six games in 15 days.”
First kick is slated for 11:00 AM at Reese Field.
