Lancaster — The last thing The Master’s University men’s soccer team wanted to do was play more futbol than it needed to on a blistering hot Thursday afternoon in the Antelope Valley.
So, TMU’s Benjamin Tembo did something about that, taking a perfect cross from Trevor Mangan and booting it into the goal four minutes into overtime to give the Mustangs a sudden 2-1 victory over host University of Antelope Valley.
Tembo’s team-leading fifth goal of the season and superb goalkeeping by Casey Phillips were just part of a total team effort that improved the Mustangs to 3-1.
Both clubs played to a scoreless tie through the opening 45 minutes before the Pioneers broke through on a Manuel Medina goal 12:45 into the second stanza.
That tally looked like it would stand up for a win as the Mustangs were unable to get any shots past UVA goalie Juan Cisneros, who wound up with 10 saves, as the minutes ticked off the clock.
However, with just six minutes left in regulation, Matt Logan used his head to even the score. The junior defender took a corner kick from Dylan Bielanski and headed it past Cisneros for the tying goal that eventually forced overtime. It was Logan’s first goal of the season.
Tembo may have booted in the decider in the extra period, but it was Phillips who made it possible. Facing a one-on-one three minutes into overtime, the senior keeper stopped the scoring bid that proved to be a catalyst for Tembo’s game-winner.
Now, the Mustangs will look to make it two in a row on Saturday when they welcome Embry-Riddle Aeronautical from Arizona to Placerita Canyon for a 10:00am start.
