The Valencia High School Vocal Jazz Choir Ensemble “Two N’ Four” won first place at the Reno Jazz Festival this past Sunday in Reno, Nevada. The group also won the Sweepstakes Award, scoring the highest in every category in the vocal division.
The Valencia vocal ensemble competed against 45 other groups from across the nation for this national championship. The group was then asked to perform an encore showcase in front of thousands in the Reno Performing Arts Center Arena.
“This award is what we (the students of this year and year’s past) have strived to achieve for 12 years, slowly but surely fine tuning our craft of a performance worthy of achieving a high level of excellence, but equally a level of inspiration,” said Christine Tavares-Mocha, choir director at Valencia High School. “The “win” is inspiring the audience and trying each time to earn a standing ovation. When you also receive the highest scored recognition like this, it’s the ultimate magical moment.”
The national championship is yet another accolade for Two N’ Four as the group has also won three Downbeat Magazine Awards.
Two N’ Four members incude Matt Bermudez, John “Reid” Bowman, Maya Brown, Cassandra Duschane, Katie Doty, John McCloud, James Meske, Tanner Ming, Zoe Jordan-Oketch, Riana Vincent, Hannah Wacholtz and Zachary Wong.
