[LASD] – Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives responded to the North County Correctional Facility, 29340 The Old Road, Castaic, at 1:30 p.m. to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of an inmate (male, age 22).
While in the recreation yard at the North County Correctional Facility, deputies observed the inmate in distress. They immediately rendered aid to the inmate. The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
There is no indication that the inmate’s death is criminal in nature. There is no further information available at this time.
Whenever the death of an inmate occurs in the Los Angeles County jail system, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Bureau, and Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. Justice System Integrity Division personnel from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office intend to attend the autopsy. Attorneys with the Los Angeles County Office of Independent Review also respond to the jail, and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff’s Department throughout every phase of the investigation. Once concluded, every aspect of the death is reviewed by the Sheriff’s Executive Death Review Committee.
