The second phase of the Castaic Sports Complex pool project was unanimously approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

The board’s action authorized the Department of Public Works to bid, award and construct the $7.5 million second phase project.

Facilities inside the pool building will also be expanded to meet the needs of the new pool and its users.

Remodeling of the pool building begins in January and will be completed by June 2016. Work on the pool itself is projected to begin in March with completion in October 2016.

“In addition to the superb recreational swimming pools and children’s splash pool completed in 2013,” said Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, “the Castaic Sports Complex will soon be able to host competitive swimming and water polo events for schools, and swim clubs, and other local groups.”

Currently, the Castaic Sports Complex features a 6,000-square-foot competition-style recreational swimming pool and a 4,435-square-foot lap pool with an integrated children’s splash pool.

The complex also features a 12,500-square-foot pool building with change rooms, showers, restrooms, staff offices, storage and mechanical rooms.

The construction contract for the project will include a local hiring preference and maintain the LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, silver certification for optimizing energy and water use, improving indoor air quality and maximizing the use and reuse of sustainable and local resources.

The project is partially paid for by the Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks, Proposition A, and Enhanced Unincorporated Area Services, Proposition 62, funds.

Located at 31350 North Castaic Road in Castaic, the Sports Complex is operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation.
