The William S. Hart Union High School District has implemented a district-wide ban of clown costumes on school campuses for Halloween due to recent social media scares in the community.
Students are still permitted to wear Halloween costumes to school on Monday, Oct. 31 but must follow the dress code guidelines for each school.
Placerita Junior High released a full list of guidelines that can be seen on the school’s website.
The guidelines include no excessive blood or gore, no pajamas, slippers, bare midriffs, short skirts, low necklines, underwear or immodest clothing, no clothing that could demean or insult others and no outfits that promote drug or alcohol use.
The district’s rulebook states that “students’ clothing must not present a health or safety hazard or a distraction which would interfere with the educational process. […] Specific clothing and hats determined by the school district or school site to be gang-related or inappropriate apparel may be prohibited by the dress code policy.”
Placerita Junior High students are permitted to have masks on for the costume contest but they must be removed when they are not participating in the contest, said Principal Jan Hayes-Rennels during the school’s morning student news broadcast.
