The College of the Canyons Art Gallery will showcase the work of mixed media artist Ed Flynn in the exhibition “Avenues & Turnabouts” opening Tuesday, Aug. 30.
A longtime resident of Atwater Village, Flynn has become known for creating his own unique painting style by combining the sculptural elements of “found objects” with oil paint, metal, and board.
“Metal objects are used as dictated by existing shape with no altering of the object, in the Dada method of using each piece as is,” said Flynn of his process.
The result, said Larry Hurst, COC art gallery director, is an unusual marriage of painting and sculpture that could be described as assemblage painting.
“The color palate is often bright and energetic and the found objects counter balance with a sense of calm,” said Hurst.
As the first show of the fall semester, Ed Flynn “Avenues & Turnabouts” encapsulates the basic elements and principles of good design that are taught at COC.
“This exhibition will help our students to understand these concepts,” said Hurst. “The subsequent opportunity to meet and discuss this work with the artist will further expand their understanding.”
The exhibition “Avenues & Turnabouts” will run through Thursday, Oct. 6.
An artist’s reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.
A special conversation with the artist will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.
All gallery exhibitions and related events are free and open to the public.
More About the Artist
A graduate of CalArts and the Rhode Island School of Design, Ed Flynn has taught art at Santa Monica College, Rhode Island School of Design, Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington and COC. His work can be found in public and private collections throughout the United States. He is represented by the Hawthorne Gallery in Big Sur.

So excited for this great exhibit. Have know this artist since we were kids and his work is so unique and interesting – unlike any other mixed media you have ever seen. Don’t miss it.
