This week’s SCVTV/California Superstores Outstanding Student of the Week is Caleb Kim from Golden Valley High School. Caleb has a 4.7 GPA and scored 30 on the ACT. He sees good grades as a representation of his best efforts.
“It is often perceived as a measure (of academic success)”, Caleb said. “But personally to me it’s more about the experience I suppose. You know, obviously I’m focused on the grades and what I get but there are great teachers… and when I see the letter grade I say, ‘Wow. This teacher was really great.”
For his college career he wants out of California. So Caleb is looking at the University of Chicago, Duke, Boston College and Emory. His number one choice, however, is Cornell.
“The weather over there is different,” he said. “They have a beautiful landscape and they have an ILP program — Industrial Labor Relations — that’s really interesting. That’s something I want to pursue and they have a strong curriculum there.”
Caleb learned the art of industrial labor relations through arguments he had with his sister and how he always ended up getting in trouble because of her ability to persuade their parents. He would like to learn that power of persuasion to one day become a labor attorney and ultimately a judge.
“She would be the most cunning liar I have ever seen in my life,” Caleb said. “Obviously justice won’t be prevailing all the time, but just the fact there there is that opportunity to present the situation and argue for it and the standardized decisions that the constitution has for us, I think that’s enough for me.”
Congratulations to Caleb Kim of Golden Valley High School, the SCVTV/California Superstores Outstanding Student of the Week.
