The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team started its season in high-scoring fashion with a four-goal outburst that allowed the Cougars to win its season opener over visiting Ventura College.
The two teams were knotted in a scoreless tie until COC freshman midfielder Alondra Solis put Canyons on the board in the 42nd minute with a free kick that resulted in top-shelf goal.
The score, which was Solis’ first of two on the night, helped COC seize the momentum in what had been an evenly matched contest.
In the 64th minute, sophomore defender Justine Hoeft found the back of the net to put the Cougars ahead 2-0.
Later it was midfielder Kiara Gunn who joined in on the attack with a goal assisted by Jennifer Roney in the 82nd minute.
Less than three minutes later, Solis was at it again with a ball that found its way into the net and put the game safely in hand at the score of 4-0.
The Cougars outshot the Pirates 16-6 in the match.
COC goalkeeper Emily Ozanich was credited with the win, after coming in to relieve Jordan Burrow in the 36th minute of play. Both players were credited with two saves.
Here’s the box score.
Canyons (1-0) next faced Long Beach City College on Thursday, day one of the Nike Soccer Community College Showcase hosted by Ventura College. The Cougars will then face Evergreen Valley College on Saturday.
