LOS ANGELES – The Major Disaster Declaration requested Sunday by California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. was approved by President Donald J. Trump on Monday evening.

Federal funds will be available to help communities recover from wildfires that started on Nov. 8.

The declaration means Los Angeles County residents impacted by the Woolsey Fire will be eligible to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster funds to help their recovery. Individuals and businesses affected by the recent fire may be eligible to receive support for temporary housing, home-repair and damage to essential household items. Additionally, this assistance covers disaster-related childcare, medical and essential vehicle expenses.

People affected by the fires can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov or call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362). This number is also for users of 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS). TTY users can call 1-800-462-7585.

Individuals should first file claims with their insurance carriers. The consideration of FEMA grants or low-interest loans are dependent on insurance coverage and need.

The declaration also provides resources to local governments for their repair or replacement of buildings and infrastructure damaged in the fires.
