The Colorado Rockies have announced the Lancaster JetHawks opening day roster for the 2017 season. The group of 25 players includes Palmdale native OF Mylz Jones, Santa Clarita native INF Brian Mundell and the third-overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, INF Brendan Rodgers.
Jones and Mundell are two of nine players on Lancaster’s roster who played either high school or college baseball in Southern California. Jones attended Lancaster’s Paraclete High School, which holds its graduation ceremonies at The Hangar, before moving on to play baseball at Cal State Bakersfield. Jones, Colorado’s 13th round pick in 2015, stole 28 bases last year in his first full season with Low-A Asheville in the South Atlantic League.
Mundell, a product of Valencia High School and Cal Poly, was named the South Atlantic League MVP in 2016 after setting a modern minor league baseball record with 59 doubles. He broke the mark most recently held by former JetHawk Zach Daeges who hit 55 doubles for Lancaster in 2007.
The 20-year-old Rodgers enters the season as the top-rated prospect in the Colorado organization according to Baseball America and MLB.com. Rodgers will become the third top-five pick from the 2015 draft to play for the JetHawks, joining Alex Bregman (second) and Kyle Tucker (fifth). He hit .281 with 19 home runs and 31 doubles with Asheville in 2016.
The roster features 13 pitchers including San Dimas native RHP Peter Lambert. The 19-year-old was committed to play baseball at UCLA before the Rockies drafted him in the second round in 2015 out of San Dimas High School. He tossed 126 innings for Asheville in his first full season in 2016. RHP Trey Killian will join Lambert on Lancaster’s pitching staff after winning 12 games for the Tourists last season. RHP Alexander Guillen and RHP Sam Thoele combined to record 29 saves with Asheville a year ago.
Eight players will begin the season in Lancaster after finishing the 2016 campaign in the California League with Modesto. INF Forrest Wall, the 35th overall pick in the 2014 draft, appeared in 120 games with the Nuts last season while OF Wes Rogers led the Cal League with 43 stolen bases. RHP Logan Cozart, RHP Craig Schlitter, and Santa Ana, Calif. native RHP Colin Welmon each pitched in over 35 games out of Modesto’s bullpen in 2016. OF Yonathan Daza and RHP Carlos Polanco appeared in games against the JetHawks with Modesto.
INF Scott Burcham will play in Lancaster after spending much of his spring as a shortstop with Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic. The La Quinta, Calif. native hit .261 in six games during Israel’s deepest tournament run ever. He’s joined on the infield by former Long Beach State shortstop INF Garrett Hampson. He will make his full season debut with the JetHawks after stealing 36 bases for the short-season Boise Hawks in 2016.
Other Lancaster players with Southern California roots include C Chris Rabago (UC Irvine), LHP Max Schuh (UCLA) and INF Roberto Ramos (Agoura Hills/College of the Canyons).
The club is led by manager Fred Ocasio, pitching coach Brandon Emanuel and hitting coach Derrick May. Anthony Sanders will serve as the team’s developmental supervisor.
The JetHawks take the field at The Hangar for the first time this season in an exhibition game against University of Antelope Valley this Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. before hosting the Visalia Rawhide in the season-opener on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
