1875 - Construction begins on San Fernando Railroad Tunnel [story]
San Fernando Railroad Tunnel

Guest commentary by Mayor Marsha McLean
| Tuesday, Aug 30, 2011

Your City Council has been working on a myriad of projects over the past several months. Some of them are long-standing projects that will provide significant enhancements for our city into the future.

In Old Town Newhall, we are well underway with construction of a new, 30,000-square-foot library. The state-of-the-art building will serve as a focal point for our Old Town, and with its children’s library, teen resource area, dozens of public use computers and public meeting areas, it will be a wonderful amenity for our city.

If you would like to see the “real time” progress of the library, check out our Library Construction Cam on the City’s website at www.santaclaritalibrary.com.

On behalf of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce and the city, I would like to encourage you to attend the 27th Annual SCV Community Expo (aka Home and Business Expo) and Taste of Expo on Sept. 16, 17 and 18 at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway, just off Golden Valley Road.

Access is easy and central to the community via the cross-valley connector. Expo offers new and expanded parking adjacent to the venue, along with complimentary shuttle service.

The Expo committee is pulling out all stops to attract the largest crowds ever. Visitors will find free admission on Saturday and Sunday, free parking, complimentary shuttle service and expanded parking areas.

In addition, College of the Canyons will host its annual fall job fair on site, and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital medical staff will administer free flu shots on Saturday for seniors and qualified caregivers. For more information on this great event, visit www.scvchamber.com.

One of my top priorities as your mayor is to reach out to you, our residents. I can be reached by email at mmclean(at)santa-clarita.com. If you would like to meet, please contact my office at City Hall at 661.255.4395.

Your thoughts, ideas and suggestions are important to me, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Marsha McLean is mayor of the city of Santa Clarita.

Our community is rich with history, blending the spirit of the Old West with the history of our great nation, especially in our parks. When Santa Clarita incorporated in 1987, we only had eight parks. Today, we are home to more than three dozen, and this year, we are excited to welcome not just two new parks.
