[KHTS] – For the second Thanksgiving in a row, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at Newhall Elementary School on Walnut Street will be giving back to the community on Friday with baskets of food for families in need.
The Newhall Elementary Student Council of 24 students hosted a school-wide food drive to collect Thanksgiving essentials like canned vegetables and pumpkin, boxed mashed potatoes and stuffing and rolls to fill 10 gift baskets.
The student council also raised money for turkeys through a small store on campus that they operate once a week.
Angela Allen, Newhall Elementary teacher who leads the Student Council, said that they settled on the idea of a food drive because it was “something the whole school can participate in.”
The school office chose 10 families in the Newhall community that could benefit from the gift baskets.
Last year, the community was enthusiastic about the giveaway, Allen said.
“The families were just extremely grateful and thankful,” she said.
She also thought it was a good experience for the students.
“The Student Council gets a feel for their responsibility here at the school and the part that they play in helping others,” Allen said.
The families will come to campus between 7:45 and 8:15 a.m. on Friday to pick up their baskets.
