As we begin a new calendar year, it is my pleasure to share with you some of the top programs and projects on our city’s plan for 2015.

We are developing a new strategic plan called Santa Clarita 2020. The plan will encompass a wide range of long-term projects and programs aimed at taking our city into the next decade and beyond.

One of the key aspects of the plan is community engagement. Each project and program will have a separate outreach effort with multiple opportunities for our community to provide their thoughts and ideas.

In Canyon Country, the City Council recently purchased 6.5 acres near the intersection of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway to locate a new and permanent community center. We are interested in master-planning the land to include amenities the community wants and needs.

In Saugus, we are exploring building a new library and community room. While no location has been selected, your input as to where it ought to be and what it should include are important.

In Valencia, we are starting to meet with the community regarding rehabbing Old Orchard Park. We will be creating a master plan for the park that will be driven by community input and ideas. Some of the things we’ve heard already include more parking and upgraded irrigation. What else would you like to see at Old Orchard Park?

In Newhall, we will soon be under construction with a beautification project along Newhall Avenue from the Metrolink rail line to the existing median at Sierra Highway. We will be installing landscaped medians to beautify this area, which is the southern gateway into our city.

For a full list of the projects and programs, as well as upcoming meetings and survey opportunities, visit SantaClarita2020.com.

Ken Striplin is the city manager of the city of Santa Clarita.

Great a master plan for a park! How about the Monster who kidnapped a 3 year old girl from her bedroom by a stranger that should have been in prison, but was out for no other reason than proposition 47! The city and sheriff’s management have their heads buried in the “risk management” sand! I heard tonight the deputies that are supposed to protect our community let a reckless driving recidivist theif that refused to stop for their red flashing lights go because proposition 47 and the ridiculous “rules of engagement” prevented them from chasing! Isn’t that what the police are supposed to do, catch the bad guy???? Maybe the answer is obvious? La county sheriff thanks, but Santa Clarita needs its own police department that has a set to stand up against crime. Can’t the city of Santa Clarita AUDIT THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT CONTRACT? MAYBE MR STRICKLAND WOULD SEE THROUGH THE SMOKE AND MIRRORS.
