The Saugus Union School District Governing Board conducted swearing-in ceremonies on Tuesday for trustees elected this past November.
The three sworn in include two new trustees – Laura Arrowsmith and David Barlavi – as well as re-elected board member and outgoing Board President, Christopher Trunkey.
Additionally, the Governing Board selected a new President and a new Clerk for 2019. Moving into the role of President is Julie Olsen, Trustee for Area 3 and the new Clerk is Dr. David Powell, Trustee for Area 4.
“We are looking forward to continuing the long standing course of the Saugus Union School District – Excellence in Elementary Education,” said Dr. Colleen Hawkins, Saugus District Superintendent. “With two new Board members, we will both continue to increase and improve student achievement while incorporating the ideas brought by our new members to the District.
“The Board will begin the 2019 year by holding a special meeting to discuss goals for the Superintendent andmparticipate in Board/Superintendent team building activities to ensure that the vision for the school district is consistent as we move forward doing our work,” she added.
Arrowsmith, a longtime history teacher in the Hart Union School District, joins the Board as Trustee for Area 2.
“ It’s an exciting time to be in education and I am looking forward to being part of the team that serves the students, families, teachers, and staff of the Saugus Union School District,” said Arrowsmith.
Barlavi, an attorney in the Santa Clarita area, replaces the retiring De La Cerda in area 1. “I
am humbled by the thought of my first swearing-in ceremony to an elected public office. I am extremely thankful to the community that elected me, and am looking forward to getting down to work for our students, teachers, staff and administrators,” added Barlavi.
Trunkey will continue to serve as trustee for area 5.
“I am grateful to our community for the trust they have placed in me with another term’, added Trunkey. “It is a testament to the work we have accomplished together over the last four years and the vision we have entrusted to our new Superintendent, Dr. Hawkins.”
The December 11 meeting is the last scheduled for 2018 with the next board meeting scheduled for January 22, 2019. The new schedule will be posted to the SUSD website.
