This was not unlike The Master’s University’s handful of other matchups with top NAIA teams this season.
The No. 23 Mustangs created more than enough opportunities. They simply didn’t capitalize on any of them in a 2-0 loss to No. 11 Westmont on Saturday in Santa Barbara.
Master’s managed 18 shots, eight of them on goal, but couldn’t match a pair of Warrior goals, one early in the first half and another in the second.
The result moved Westmont (10-1-2, 3-1-1 GSAC) one point ahead of the Mustangs (10-4-1, 3-2) for second place in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings. Three games remain.
Master’s had won its last three games entering the day, posting a shutout in all three contests.
Westmont broke the Mustangs’ streak of more than 280 straight minutes of soccer without allowing a goal when Hailey Parker scored from long range in the 12th minute.
The score stayed the same until the 59th minute. Bri Johnson took a pass from Savannah Scott and scored.
Gabi Haw made eight saves for Westmont.
Lacey Lehman made two saves for Master’s, which has played five ranked opponents in 2018.
Here’s the box score.
The Mustangs are 1-4 in those games, the win coming in overtime against Jamestown on Sept. 8.
Master’s will host Hope International on Thursday at TMU.
