Game Recap By Mason Nesbitt, TMU Sports Information Director
The air horn sounded, beckoning Jasmine Logan toward the sideline and a well-deserved rest.
The forward spent most of Wednesday afternoon buzzing around Reese Field and wreaking havoc on visiting San Diego Christian. But now, on her senior day, Logan allowed herself a deep breath and a swig from a Gatorade bottle. Her team breathed a collective sigh of relief, too.
The Mustangs looked relaxed in a 4-0 win that snapped a two-match losing streak and kept TMU positioned to host a game in next month’s conference tournament.
Master’s has earned a spot in the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament and can secure at least a first-round home game if it wins at Ottawa University Arizona on Saturday.
Logan scored three goals Thursday and senior Lynnae George provided the other. It was a performance reminiscent of 2017 when TMU was one of the most prolific scoring teams in program history.
“It felt like we were back to normal today,” Logan said. “I feel like our team is at a place right now where we’re like, ‘OK, take a breath. We all know how to play soccer. We all know how to connect the ball.’ We all were able to take a step back and enjoy the day.”
The joy came early.
George opened the scoring for the Mustangs in the second minute by positioning herself in the right place at the right time. Senior Kellian Ahearn laced a shot that ricocheted off the keeper, and George cleaned up the rebound, scoring her fourth goal of the season.
She wasn’t done.
In the 17th minute, the senior forward zipped a pass across the turf, and Logan ran onto it 30 yards downfield, scoring for the second time in a two-minute span.
Logan scored again three minutes into the second half to complete the hat trick, and Ahearn finished the day with three assists in what was TMU’s highest scoring output since a 6-0 win over Arizona Christian on Sept. 29.
It was more than enough, as the Mustang defense held the Hawks to two shots, both after halftime.
Master’s has recorded nine shutouts this season. But goals, at times, have been hard to come by. Wednesday was encouraging.
“We’ve been tight the last couple games,” George said, “and we’re trying to get rid of that fear when you’re in front of the goal and you’re like, ‘I have to score this. I have to.’ That mentality doesn’t work for this team. We need to be OK to make mistakes. We made a lot of mistakes today, but we capitalized on our chances.”
