College of the Canyons’ women’s basketball team rolled to a 95-50 win over L.A. Pierce College in the Cougars’ conference opener on Saturday night, behind a game-high 21 points and 16 rebounds from sophomore Kalana Inemer.
Canyons (10-10, 1-0) got to the .500 mark for the first time this season with its second straight victory, and third over the last four games.
The Cougars, which have yet to play a game on their home court, began the season with a 1-5 mark. Since then COC has battled back, and is now focused on making a run at a possible Western State Conference (WSC), South Division title.
Canyons is joined by West L.A. College (16-4, 1-0) as the only other team in the conference with a record of at least .500.
The win over L.A. Pierce also represented the second consecutive game, and fifth this season, in which COC’s squad has scored more than 90 points. On Jab. 6, the Cougars defeated Oxnard College 99-52 in the final non-conference contest of the season.
Canyons currently ranks 14th in the state in team scoring at a rate of 73.3 points per game, also good for tops in the conference.
On Saturday, Canyons dominated from the opening tip-off, limiting the Brahmas to single-digit point totals in both the second and fourth quarters. The Cougars eventually closed out the game with a 20-6 point differential in the fourth quarter.
COC sophomore Morgan Bizzell finished with 18 points and eight boards off the bench.
Maryrose Elias and Gissel Sanchez scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, with Rose also pulling down 10 rebounds.
Janeth Cruz made her presence felt with 13 rebounds, including 12 of the offensive variety, while CiCi O’Brien finished with 10 assists and seven points.
The Cougars shot just 41.7 percent from the floor, but committed just eight turnovers compared to 19 for the Brahmas.
L.A. Pierce (5-13, 0-2) shot just 33.3 percent for the game and lost the rebound battle 58-36.

Canyons will take its home court for the first time at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, for a conference game vs. Santa Monica College.
