As election season kicks into full gear, more names are being added to race for school board elections.

In addition to incumbents, several other community members have filed to run for positions on the Saugus Union and Sulphur Springs Union School District boards.

Ken Chase of Newhall, candidate for Sulphur Springs, has 20 years of experience as a certified management accountant and hopes to bring his financial expertise to the board.

“I think with my financial experience I can help ensure that that money is spent wisely,” Chase said.

He also hopes that solid financial planning in the future will help the district avoid teacher layoffs and early retirement.

Chase currently works for the Pak Group in Glendale and is a member of the Sulphur Springs School District Measure CK Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee.

Candidates for the Saugus Union board include Bruce Fox and Chris Trunkey.

Fox is currently a lieutenant with the Glendale Police Department. He is a former Saugus school board member.

Trunkey is the chief financial officer at Phoenix Pictures in Los Angeles. He was also a member of the Site Council for West Creek Academy, a Saugus Union school, and currently serves on the Measure V Citizens’ Oversight Committee for the William S. Hart Union High School District.

“I think that my professional background gives me a lot of experience in managing the process that the board has to go through of reviewing budgets and their financial oversight of the district,” he said. “My experience at the school through the site councils and with PTA gives me a lot of insight into the day to day educational process, working with teachers and with administrators.”

If elected, Trunkey said that he would focus on reducing class size and helping the district remain financially stable in the face of changing funding formulas and a potential decrease in enrollment.

Trunkey also wants to be the community’s voice on the board.

“I think that we need to have more overall transparency,” he said. “I would like to be the community’s representative on the board and keep people informed of what the board is doing.”
