The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the appointment of John Wicker as Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation effective Tuesday.
“I am very excited about this great opportunity. I have a very talented team of staff that are passionate about the services we provide and I feel honored to serve as their leader,” said Director Wicker.
Mr. Wicker, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Arts and Sciences, Recreation Administration, from San Diego State University, has over 37 years of experience working for the Department. He began his career with Los Angeles County and the Department as a Lake Lifeguard at Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale in 1978, when the park initially opened. Since that time, he has worked in a number of areas and held various assignments including Regional Operations Manager and Deputy Director of the Department’s South Agency from 1997 to 2005. He served as Chief Deputy Director since 2005 and Acting Director since October 1, 2015.
As Director, Mr. Wicker is responsible for the operation, management and maintenance of 179 parks and facilities, including six major regional parks, more than 100 local and community regional parks, four arboreta and botanic gardens, 22 wildlife sanctuaries and natural areas, and 20 golf courses. In addition, the Department is responsible for more than 200 miles of riding and hiking trails, the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre and the world famous Hollywood Bowl.
The Department has an annual operating budget of $191 million, 1,600 dedicated employees and more than 4,500 registered volunteers serving 20 million park visitors annually.
