On Tuesday, June 7, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Newhall School District is holding its annual art show at Valencia Valley Elementary School, located at 23601 Carrizo Drive in Valencia.
The show, curated by district art teachers John Fossa and Wendy Heard, brings together under one roof student art from every school in the Newhall School District. The art is professionally displayed, and offers an excellent glimpse into the breadth and depth of the district’s visual arts program. The atmosphere is celebratory, complete with talented Newhall musicians giving solo performances in the school-transformed-to-art-gallery setting.
“This culminating event is a real tribute to the hard work of Mr. Fossa and Ms. Heard,” said district Superintendent Paul Cordeiro. “They bring out students’ best by providing a broad learning context that includes art history and various art techniques. The students are fascinated by all of this, and get very motivated when it comes to creating their own pieces. The NSD Governing Board made the right decision in hiring credentialed art teachers with the intent of fully integrating their instruction into District’s core instructional program.”
Originating with a one-room schoolhouse in the 1880s, the Newhall School District today comprises 10 elementary schools: McGrath, Meadows, Newhall, Oak Hills, Old Orchard, Peachland, Pico Canyon, Stevenson Ranch, Valencia Valley and Wiley Canyon. Additionally, the district offers preschool programs. District schools have won multiple state and national awards for education excellence and students’ standardized testing scores have been among the highest in the Santa Clarita Valley.
In addition to focusing on science and technology, the district also continues to place a strong emphasis on arts education. For information on enrolling a student, parents can contact Teri Satorhelyi at (661) 291-4182 or tsatorhelyi@newhall.k12.ca.us.
