Trevor Mangan is one of the Mustangs’ premier goal scorers.

But that’s not all he is.

Thursday afternoon on Reese Field, the senior forward helped two teammates score as The Master’s University men’s soccer team tripped up the University of Antelope Valley 3-1.

“I was satisfied to get back on the winning track,” said TMU head coach Jim Rickard. “And, I was glad for three different goal scorers and for Trevor (Mangan) to get two assists.”

The victory improved the Mustangs’ record to 6-1.

Mangan’s first assist came at the 27:56 mark of the first half when his pass was converted into a goal by Dylan Bielanski, whose third goal of the season beat Pioneer keeper Luis Garnica for a 1-0 lead.

That slightest of leads lasted through halftime and nearly 17 minutes into the second half when Benji Tembo lit up the scoreboard with the third goal of his senior season. Mangan and Luis Garcia Sosa assisted on the score.

Just over 13 minutes later (75:26), the Mustang offense capped off the victory when sophomore defender Brayden Campos, after taking a pass from Joseph Moisant, ripped one past Garnica and into the lower left corner of the net. It was Campos’ first score of the season.

With a 3-0 lead and the victory safely in their clutches, the Mustangs aimed for their fourth shutout of the campaign.

However, the Pioneers spoiled that quest when Manuel Medina scored with 2:55 left to play.

As satisfied as he was with winning, Rickard was disappointed that the Mustangs couldn’t zero out the Pioneers.

“I wasn’t very happy about giving up a late goal to end our shutout bid,” he said.

Still, the victory was another successful tune-up for Golden State Athletic Conference play, which starts on Sept. 27.

Between now and then, though, the Mustangs play three more non-conference matches, the first of which will be on the road against No. 14 Marymount California University on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.
