NORTHRIDGE, CA—The regular season comes to a conclusion this week for the CSUN men’s soccer team as the Matadors look to secure their second consecutive Big West Conference South Division title.
CSUN hosts Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night. The Matador senior class will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff. In addition to a live stream on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health, Wednesday’s match will feature a Spanish language simulcast. Eduard Cauich and Jose Avalos will be on the call that can be found on GoMatadors.com.
CSUN improved to 3-0-1 against Big West South Division foes with its 4-1 victory at UC Irvine Saturday night. The Matadors lead the south with 14 points. Cal State Fullerton (8-6-3, 4-2-3 Big West) tied UC Riverside Saturday night and sit in second in the division with 11 points. UC Irvine is third (8) followed by UC Riverside (7).
Wednesday’s match will feature the current Big West Offensive Player of the Week in the Titans’ Samuel Goni against the current Big West Defensive Player of the Week in CSUN goalie Henrik Regitnig. Goni scored three goals and had one assist during the last week. Regitnig notched a 0.50 goals against average over 180 minutes to claim his third Defensive Player of the Week of the season.
Regitnig recorded his fourth shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over UC Riverside on Wednesday. He stopped three shots, including back-to-back saves on attempts within 10 yards in the middle of the first half. The netminder gave up a late goal in a 4-1 victory over UC Irvine on Saturday. He faced 16 Anteater shots in the game but did not need to make a save.
Including the tie earlier this season between the two clubs, CSUN and Cal State Fullerton have played four consecutive double overtime matches. The Matadors are 1-0-3 during that stretch. This is the 47th meeting between the two clubs with CSUN leading the all-time series 23-17-6.
CSUN concludes the regular season Saturday at UC Riverside in a 7 p.m. start. Antonio Lokossou leads UC Riverside in goals (3) and is tied for the team lead in points (6) with Anthony Lopez. Lopez has scored two goals and has two assists this season.
UCR goalie Vincent Morales leads the Big West in saves with 70. He is fourth in the conference in save percentage (.693). Morales has played every minute in goal this season for the Highlanders.
The Matadors have won five in a row in the series dating back to the 2014 season after defeating UCR 1-0 Oct. 18 in Northridge. This is the 38th meeting between the two clubs with CSUN leading the all-time series 25-5-7.
