The American Diabetes Association presents the first Feria de Salud in Santa Clarita, a free public event to be held Sunday, Nov. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Newhall Community Center, 22421 Market Street.
Feria is an outdoor festival celebrating Latino culture focusing on healthy lifestyle choices to help stop diabetes, which is an urgent health problem in the Latino community.
Attendees will receive free health screenings, blood pressure, cholesterol, foot, vision, dental exams, advice from doctors and Certified Diabetes Educators and much more. Feria de Salud also features live entertainment, healthy living seminars and fun for the entire family. Cooking and exercise demonstrations, along with a variety of service and product booths will be available.
Diabetes remains one of the deadliest diseases in America, taking the lives of more than 300,000 people each year. The Centers for Disease Control estimate nearly 29 million Americans – or one in 10 – are living with diabetes. The rate of diabetes among Latinos, as well as other ethnic populations, is almost double that of non-Latino Whites. Senior citizens are also at greater risk.
Seminar topics will explore the basics of diabetes, proper nutrition and fun ways to exercise. The day will also feature live cooking demonstrations and performances by mariachis, and a cadre of folkloric dancers.
Feria de Salud is an event under the Association’s Por Tu Familia program designed specifically for the Hispanic/Latino community, which has a disproportionately high incidence rate of diabetes. In 2015, this program reached nearly 100,000 Latinos throughout Los Angeles via diabetes awareness activities, prevention, educational seminars, community forums and community-specific events in collaboration with other organizations.
This event is made possible through the support of the city of Santa Clarita, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Nola Aronson’s Advanced Audiology and Easy Choice Health Plan. Alignment Healthcare is the Stop Diabetes® sponsor. Media Sponsors include InsideSCV Magazine, The Signal Multimedia, Magazine of Santa Clarita, SCVTV, KHTS AM 1220, and Point of View Communications.
