Following a lengthy and impressive career as an educator, Dr. Christine Hamlin, Saugus Union School District Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, has announced her retirement.
The retirement, announced internally in July, goes into effect on September 15, 2016.
“Christine has been instrumental in transitioning the district to the new state funding formula – LCFF – and developing an exemplary Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) with the input of all of her stakeholders,” said Judy Egan Umeck, President of the SUSD Governing Board. “Her outstanding leadership has provided the blueprint for increased technology expertise and use by teachers, a more in-depth understanding of the new state standards, the implementation of entirely new computer-based state assessment system and the selection and implementation of a new math series.
“We are a better District for her leadership in our curriculum and instruction program,” added Umeck.
Hamlin started with Saugus Union as a teacher at Mountainview Elementary in 1995 and moved to Cedarcreek as Assistant Principal in 2001; moved to Rosedell to become Principal in 2003 and oversaw their extensive modernization program before returning “home” to Mountainview to become Principal in 2005. In 2011, Hamlin took on her current role as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction , navigating the District through the transition to Common Core and the advent of CAASPP Testing.
“Christine exemplifies ‘excellence in elementary education” and inspires us to reach higher to ensure academic and personal success for every child,” added Dr. Joan Lucid, Superintendent of Saugus Union School District. “She truly lives our core values of integrity, respect, teamwork, learning and enthusiasm. She is the consummate professional and leaves a legacy of high expectations, growth mindset and academic optimism.
“We thank her for her tireless work, honest and open communication and commitment to opening the hearts of all…and we wish her the very best as she embarks on the next chapter in her life.”

I am a retired educator and know Christine personally. She is the consummate educator. Saugus School Dustrict lost a huge talent at her retirement. Hopefully they will be able to find one as gifted as Christine to replace her.
Best Wishes Christine.
