[KHTS] The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve raising developer fees in the Santa Clarita Valley to fund the building of new fire stations.
The Developer Fees Program was approved back in 1990 to fund the acquisition, construction, improvement and equipping of fire station facilities in the high-growth, urban-expansion areas of the Consolidated Fire Protection District.
Every year, the Los Angeles County Fire District reviews the Developer Fee program and gives recommendations to the Board of Supervisors to adjust the cost if needed.
This year, only Area of Benefit 2 was changed, raising the cost from $1.0574 to $1.0883 per square foot of new development.
Area of Benefit 2 consists of the Santa Clarita Valley and the unincorporated areas around the valley.
Fees are placed on development projects, either new or proposed, to cover costs associated to public services, such as fire protection.
The Developer Fee rate includes a component to recoup the Fire District’s costs associated with financing six new fire stations in the Santa Clarita Valley, four of which are operational and one is currently under development.
The Santa Clarita Valley is currently home to 10 fire stations.
The Fire District updated the Developer Fee Detailed Fire Station Plan to reflect fire station requirements. The requirements are based on growth projections in the Area of Benefit.
The Fire Station plan lays out 21 additional permanent fire stations, one temporary facility, a replacement station and two helipads that will be developed within the Developer Fee Areas of Benefit.
The new rate increase will go into effect on Feb. 1 2016.
