After a 6-3 win over San Diego Christian on Thursday, Mustang coach Curtis Lewis classified a few of the goals as “pretty.”

In the days leading up to the game, he used no such flowery language to describe what awaited The Master’s women’s soccer team.

“I think coach did a really good job preparing us,” said junior Hailey Gomillion, “so we knew what we were getting into and knew it was going to be challenging.”

The challenge lay in a long trek to San Diego, in a field in less than optimal condition and in competing in a conference where no team can be taken for granted.

The Mustangs (10-1 overall, 3-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference) were also missing a starting forward due to injury.

Gomillion stepped in and was ready to, well, go. So were her teammates.

Gomillion assisted on Lynnae George’s goal in the seventh minute.

Two minutes later, Gomillion dished the ball to Jasmine Parada, who scored her ninth goal of the year. Parada tacked on No. 10 early in the second half.

“She was fantastic and she could have had more,” Lewis said of Parada. “She was super dangerous today.”

So was Gomillion, who added her third assist in the 51st minute, giving the Mustangs an insurmountable 5-1 lead.

Suzanne Mabie capped the scoring for Master’s three minutes later in what was the team’s second-highest goal total of the year. It beat Sierra Nevada 7-0 in the season opener, and it’s been mostly smooth sailing ever since. Master’s is 10-1, matching its best start since 2013.

“We created a lot of good opportunities today,” Lewis said. “… It was fun to watch. There were some pretty goals that were scored.”

The first might’ve been the best. Defender Kayla Peterson drove down the field, maintained possession through contact and passed to Gomillion, who found George.

“She made an amazing run from the back,” Lewis said of Peterson.

San Diego didn’t back down, though.

The Hawks scored two goals in the final five minutes to the chagrin of Lewis, who felt the Mustangs checked out a little at the end.

“But a win is a win,” he said.

The Mustangs play at Arizona Christian on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
