Dalton deVries drove in three runs and three other teammates had two rbi apiece as The Master’s University ran away from visiting Marymount 14-5 in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.

Producing their second-highest run total of the season, the Mustangs won their seventh game in a row and improved to 25-18.

The Mustangs’ ability to extend innings against the Mariners was initiated in the last of the second when they parlayed four hits, six wild pitches, and two walks into five runs that erased a 1-0 deficit and gave them a lead they would never relinquish. David Sheaffer and Caleb Menez notched run-scoring singles, deVries had an rbi double, and Matt Janes hit a sacrifice fly to highlight a frame in which Menez also scored on a wild pitch.

An inning later, the Mustangs went up 7-1 when Karkenny singled with one out and deVries homered to right field. It was deVries’ fifth roundtripper of the year.

The Mariners made a slight dent in that deficit with a couple of runs in the top of the fourth to close to 7-3.

Following two scoreless frames, the Mustang offense went back to work in the sixth, scoring three more times to create a 10-3 advantage. The big hit in the inning was Jason Karkenny’s two-run double to left-center field that plated Michael Sexton and courtesy runner Ricky Sottile. Earlier, Aaron Shackelford’s sacrifice fly to center field scored Max Maitland, who had led off the frame with a walk.

The Mustangs duplicated that run production in the seventh with a couple of homers doing all the damage. The first long ball came off Jonah Jarrard’s bat, a one-out blast over the fence in left-center field that chased Maitland home. It was Jarrard’s fifth home run of the year. An out later, Shackelford clubbed his team-leading 11th home run, a solo shot down the right field line that made it a 13-3 game.

In the eighth, the Mustangs closed out their scoring on pinch-hitter Ryan Bricker’s sacrifice fly to right field that scored Pearson Good.

The Mariners tacked on two meaningless runs in the ninth to produce the final score.

The Mustangs outhit the Mariners 11-5 with Jarrard (two rbi), Karkenny (two rbi), and deVries (three rbi) collecting two hits apiece.

On a day when the offense took center stage, the “pitching by committee” strategy was good enough. Five Mustang hurlers took to the mound with starter Aaron Alexander (8-2) picking up the win after putting in three innings of work.

The Mustangs will have to wait over a week before attempting to extend their winning streak since they’ll take the Easter weekend off and then get ready for a crucial three-game series at first-place Vanguard, April 21-22.
