Box Score Despite most of the team still feeling ill and battling nagging injuries, The Master’s men’s basketball team travelled to Claremont and defeated the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 61-55 Tuesday night.
The Mustangs did not shoot well, just 43% from the field and 2-of-18 (11%) from behind the 3-point line, but the defense held the Sagehens to just 31% shooting to get the win.
“This was a good win,” said Head Coach Kelvin Starr. “The team really needed it before getting a break to get healthy. We shot horribly from the three and the line but played good enough defensively to pull it off.”
Pomona-Pitzer took a 26-25 lead into the locker room and scored the first four points of the second half to grab a five-point lead. But the Mustangs went on a 13-0 run to go up 38-30 with 13:05 to play. The Master’s got up by as much as 10 points, but the Sagehens closed to within one with 4:55 to play. That’s when Deondre Earley scored seven of his 11 points in those final moments of the game to seal the win for The Master’s.
“Deon was great down the stretch on both ends of the floor,” Starr said.
Kaleb Lowery scored his seventh double-double in eight games, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, to lead The Master’s (5-3). Earley’s 11 was followed by Jordan Caruso getting 10 and six rebounds, Victor Ohia Obioha’s seven points and four boards, and Miles Mendes grabbing seven rebounds to go with four points.
“I am happy to get a win before the break,” Starr said. “We are all ready for a few days to rest up and get healthy.”
The Master’s will have eight days before getting back to the hardwood in a GSAC contest at home against Westmont on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
