Mustang Brayden Campos didn’t rip his shirt off or slide on two knees toward the sideline after scoring the golden goal with 1:44 left in the second overtime Saturday afternoon against Hope International.

After rejoicing with his Master’s teammates, the freshman retired to the sideline where he played down his role in the game-winner.

“I didn’t do much, my teammate got the ball to me, I was just there, it wasn’t me, it was a team effort,” he said.

Campos’ humility didn’t overshadow the importance, though, of TMU’s double-overtime, 2-1 victory over the Royals. It snapped a two-match losing skid for the Mustangs (9-3-2, 4-2 GSAC) and vaulted them into a three-way tie for second place in conference standings.

“What an epic game and great victory against a very dangerous team,” said TMU coach Jim Rickard. “Today was a must-win and my guys kept fighting even when things looked bleak.”

It certainly looked that way just 9:41 into play when Royal Alex Zuluaga beat Mustang goalie Casey Phillips with the game’s first goal.

That lead held up through the rest of the half, one in which both squads fired off six shots and the Royals held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The tide started to turn, though, less than 10 minutes (54:49) into the second stanza when freshman Daniel Smith evened things up with his second goal of the season.

That shot was part of a second-half barrage (12 shots) produced by the Mustangs. It forced Royal goalie Ryan Brown to make five saves and set things up for Campos’ sudden-victory goal off an assist from Smith.

The key victory came on a day when Westmont lost to first-place Vanguard, setting up a crucial match with the Warriors next Saturday in Santa Barbara.
